WASHINGTON, DC - A Trump administration early retirement plan at the Internal Revenue Service has been accepted by more than 22,000 employees, according to authorities.
The plan will pay full salary through September 30 for those resigning, with many going on leave.
The IRS employed some 100,000 workers when the Trump Administration took office. To date, 7,000 probationary employees have been fired and another 5,000 have left in the past three months.
Concerns continue to be raised that the reduction of so many employees could slow the processing of both tax returns and payments to US taxpayers.
The reduction in staffing is based upon Trump pledges to reduce the U.S. debt of $36.6 trillion.
"I worry that this Administration's destructive initiatives at IRS will cost the federal government hundreds of billions of dollars in revenue, while putting taxpayer services and privacy at risk," said Chye-Ching Huang, executive director of the nonpartisan Tax Law Center at New York University, as quoted by Reuters.
It has been reported that some 200,000 workers have left the 2.3 million civilian federal workforce through buyout offers, layoffs and resignations.
