BEIJING, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Here are the latest Chinese sports headlines from the past week:
1. Shanghai wins first CBA title in 24 years
The Shanghai Sharks defeated the Zhejiang Lions 103-82 in Game 5 on June 5 to win the 2025-26 Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) Finals 4-1, winning their second league title and the first since 2002.
Wang Zhelin led the Sharks with 29 points and 14 rebounds, while Brandon Goodwin added 25 points. For the Lions, Barry Brown Jr. scored a team-high 33 points on top of seven rebounds and three assists, and Hu Jinqiu contributed 20 points and nine rebounds.
Shanghai finished the regular season with a 38-4 record, powered by a 23-game winning streak to tie their own record in 2001-02 season.
2. China outlasts Thailand 3-2 for first win at 2026 women's VNL
Host China outlasted Thailand 3-2 on June 4 to secure its first victory in the 2026 Women's Volleyball Nations League (VNL).
Bouncing back from a 3-0 loss to the Czech Republic on June 3, the Chinese women defeated Thailand 25-14, 24-26, 25-19, 23-25 and 15-7 to improve to a 1-1 record in the Nanjing leg.
Zhuang Yushan led China with 21 points, while Tang Xin, Wang Aoqian and Dong Yuhan added 18, 13 and 10 points respectively.
3. China beats Singapore in international friendly as Wu celebrates 100th cap
China beat Singapore 2-1 in an international friendly on June 5 as star striker Wu Lei celebrated his 100th cap.
22-year-old goalkeeper Li Hao made his senior debut at the Jalan Besar Stadium after a strong showing at the AFC U23 Asian Cup in January, while three under-21 players, Wang Yudong, Mao Weijie and Yang Xi also started.
Sai Erjini'ao opened the scoring in the 16th minute from close range following a cross by Xie Wenneng, his first goal for China. Zhang Yuning doubled the lead from the penalty spot in the 41st minute after Hariss Harun was penalized for a handball.
Singapore pulled one back in the 76th minute when Zhu Chenjie's clearance attempt fell short, allowing Ilhan Fandi to slot home a left-footed finish from the center of the box.
China will next face Thailand on June 9 in Jinhua, Zhejiang province, the team's first home match under new head coach Shao Jiayi, who took charge in November last year.
4. China women's national team loses to Russia 2-1 in friendly
China women's national team lost 2-1 to Russia in the CFA Team China International Women's Football Competition in the central Chinese city of Wuhan on June 3.
Russia broke the deadlock in the 54th minute when Natalia Mashina struck a volley from the flank. Chinese goalkeeper Pan Hongyan got a hand to the ball, but it deflected off her fingertips, hit the post and bounced into the net.
China responded quickly, as Wang Shuang leveled the score with a powerful long-range strike five minutes later.
In the 87th minute, Azaliya Zalmieva converted Veronika Kuropatkina's corner kick to restore Russia's lead at 2-1. Anna Kozhinikova headed home in stoppage time, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
The match is part of China's fourth national-team training camp this year, which runs from May 18 to June 8 as preparations continue for the 2026 Asian Games and the 2027 Women's World Cup.
5. Wang Chuqin appointed China men's table tennis captain
World No. 1 Wang Chuqin has been appointed captain of China's men's table tennis team, with Liang Jingkun named vice captain.
The duo helped China win its 12th straight men's title at the ITTF World Team Table Tennis Championships Finals in London last month. Wang had a perfect record in all 10 of his matches at the tournament, while Liang pulled off consecutive comeback victories in the semifinals and the final, against Alexis Lebrun of France and Japan's Tomokazu Harimoto, respectively.
