MOSCOW, Russia: The governor of Sakhalin, a Russian island in the Pacific, has declared an emergency after a Chinese cargo ship got stuck near its southwest coast.
Governor Valery Limarenko said the ship, An Yang 2, is carrying coal and heavy fuel oil, but the 20 crew members are safe. He also said there has been no fuel spill so far, but authorities are preparing for any situation.
Bad weather has made it difficult for rescue teams to reach the ship, which is stuck in shallow waters near Nevelsky district. Officials are getting ready to remove fuel from the damaged vessel, which is about 200 meters (650 feet) from the shore.
Earlier this year, a big fuel oil spill occurred in southwestern Russia when two tankers were damaged in a storm near Crimea. Hundreds of volunteers worked for weeks to clean up the spill.
Sakhalin is part of Russia's Far East and includes the Kuril Islands. These islands have been disputed between Russia and Japan for decades. Soviet troops took them at the end of World War II, and Russia has controlled them ever since. Because of this dispute, Russia and Japan never signed a peace treaty after the war.
